Taking Refuge & Five Precepts (Kui Yee)

As a basis for Buddhist cultivation, it is very important that one takes refuge in the triple gems and take the five precepts. Taking refuge in the triple gems and holding the five precepts is similar to enrolling at university and following the rules of the institution where one studies. The Triple Gems and the Five Precepts are as follows:

The Triple Gems:

  1. I take refuge in the Buddha, the enlightened one who shows me The Way in this life.
  2. I take refuge in the Dharma, the thirty-two chapters of buddhist scriptures that shows me the way of understanding and love.
  3. I take refuge in the Sangha, the community that lives in harmony and awareness.

The Five Precepts:

  1. I undertake the precept to abstain from killing living beings.
  2. I undertake the precept to abstain from taking what is not mine.
  3. I undertake the precept to abstain from sexual misbehaviour.
  4. I undertake the precept to abstain from harmful speech.
  5. I undertake the precept to abstain from taking alcohol and drugs.

At Yun Yang Temple, Venerable Master Ru-Sun regularly conducts the Taking Refuge in The Triple Gems and the Five Precepts Ceremony.
