The Origin of The
Australian Buddhist Society
The
founding of the Australian Buddhist Society follows the setting of the Chinese
Buddhist Society in Taiwan
which was the wish of the Zen Master, Venerable Bai Yun. He firmly believes
that such a body is essential to carry on the promotion of Buddhism through the
display of compassion to the weak and the elderly. For a straight eight years,
the body has gain high recognition from both the government and communities
alike. As disciples of the Buddhist faith, we should make it our duty to ensure
its continuity and prosperity.
Australia is
a highly democratic and multicultural society. Its people are known for being
law abiding, highly educated, tolerant and courteous. It is the aim of the
Society to upkeep the objectives of the parent society to continue to spread
compassion, to practice generosity and to elevate social moral as guided by the
guidelines laid down by the Venerable Bai Yun and by all great masters of
generations before so Australians can continue to live in peace and harmony and
to benefit from the joy of life.
The
Australian Buddhist Society was officially established on 23rd February 2006.
To date, membership has reached more than 190. In the past, Yun
Yang
Temple
had shy away from widespread publicity and contact with other associations has
been kept to a minimum. However, we have come to realize that if we want to do
more for the society at large, we need to expand our manpower. Thus our current
membership drive. As Buddhism is all about life, we need to take the teaching
to the people so we can apply it in our daily activities.
It is our
sincere wish that you can join us to help fulfill the wish of the Venerable so
that we can work together to fulfill our duty as the people of Australia,
to contribute positively to the communities and give help to those who need it so
we can all share in a better and more peaceful world!
